Noticing & Supporting Regulation –
A Whole School Approach

Noticing & Supporting Regulation works because both halves happen together: students learn a shared way of noticing and managing their own regulation, while staff are trained and supported to teach and reinforce it consistently.

 For students - Tuned In
A packaged, sequenced lesson program delivered by classroom teachers, with SSO support. Five sessions per term, tailored to three age bands:
- Junior (Foundation–Year 2) — 30 minutes, adult-led, picture-based "body speed" vocabulary and a whole-class toolbox
- Middle (Years 3–4) — 50 minutes, movement-based activities building a personal toolkit card and class wall chart
- Senior (Years 5–6) — 50 minutes, independent trialling and toolkit design, with an optional peer-mentoring session with a junior class
Across all three bands, students move through the same three-step cycle — check in, check the task, choose a tool — with adult support easing off as independence grows through primary school.

For staff — the training and support sequence
Teachers and SSOs complete a parallel sequence before delivering Tuned In, so every adult in the building shares the same language and approach (see Program sequence below).

Program sequence

1. CONFIDENT AND CONNECTED CHILDREN (CACC) Our 3-hour foundation workshop — brain-body development, the power of relationships, and practical regulation tools for the whole staff group.

2. UNDERSTANDING REGULATION Two-hour session with focus on regulation and the Window of Tolerance, what's actually being taught to students through Tuned In, and planning for the classroom data-collection window ahead.

3. DATA COLLECTION Across a two-week period, staff use a simple, shared tool to notice regulation patterns in their own classroom — building a real picture of what's happening, not a hypothetical one.

4. DATA ANALYSIS & STRATEGY SESSION A 90-minute session where staff come together to look at what the data showed and build concrete, whole-class strategies as a group — plus a small-group handover specific to their year band.

5. REVIEW SESSION A 60-minute session (recommended 4-6 weeks later) where staff come together to reflect on strategies that have been used, what's worked, what needs adjusting and 'next steps'.

OPTIONAL ADD-ON ongoing on-site consultation, where we work alongside staff directly in the classroom or yard as needs come up.

What makes our training and consultations different

EXPERIENCE-INFORMED 70+ years collective OT experience working in schools, childcare centres, and community settings. We know the challenges you’re facing because we see them every week.

PRACTICAL, NOT THEORETICAL You leave with strategies you can use tomorrow, not just concepts to think about.

NEURODIVERSITY-AFFIRMING Training grounded in respect for all learners. Supporting diverse needs without trying to make children “normal.”

RELATIONSHIP-BASED Everything comes back to connection and safety. You can’t manage behaviour until children feel safe.

NO JARGON We make complex child development concepts accessible. Plain language, real examples.

INTERACTIVE We don’t lecture at you for three hours. There’s discussion, problem-solving together, practical application.
